The VW Atlas is a three-row SUV that offers excellent seating and cargo space in an affordable package. It's a great option for families and can be used as a fun way for you to travel with your friends or in a couple.

Although the Volkswagen Atlas is a bit out of date, it's still a well-built SUV for families that is easy to drive. The model offers a range in trims as well as a host of technology features to make it suitable for modern drivers.

At the top of the list is the standard V6 engine that makes a fair amount of power, and a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission. Although it doesn't have the same acceleration as its rivals, it will get you there with reasonable ease.

Although fuel economy is not the best, it's still better than the base SUVs from Honda or Kia. The city gets it 20 mpg and the highway 25 mpg, which isn’t bad.

The interior comfort is good, with a quiet cabin that's easy to use and decent quality controls. The third-row seats have enough leg and shoulder room for adults. Additionally, there is a reclining back seat with an ottoman that allows you to store items when you're on the go.

Driver assistance technologies are plentiful and helpful. Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert alert you to vehicles that are near your blind spot. For frontal crashes, forward collision warning and auto emergency braking may be helpful.

Although the infotainment system may not be as advanced as its competitors, it is intuitive and simple to use. There is a head up display, an upgraded touchscreen, and smartphone compatibility for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Volkswagen considers safety a top priority, and the Atlas reflects this. The standard suite comprises a precollision braking system that detects pedestrians, an adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function, and lane departure alert. An upgrade is possible to a available satnav system or a heads up display with navigation.

You can get a little more power with the turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder. It produces 269 hp, and a staggering 273 lb/ft of torque. This powerplant can be ordered with front- or all-wheel-drive and it has a 5,000-pound maximum towing capacity.

EPA ratings for front-wheel drive are 21/25 mpg and all-wheel drive are 20/24 mpg. Although it's not the best-in-class rating for SUVs with four cylinder engines, this rating is still better than the EPA ratings.

Exterior Style

The Atlas is tall and bulky, with square shoulders and a straight profile. It looks more like a pickup truck than other full-size SUVs on the market, and it isn't as handsome as the Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisade.

Prices

For a front-wheel-drive model, the Atlas' MSRP starts at $24,400. This includes the standard 2.0-liter four cylinder. For $1,650 more, you can get a V-6-powered version. There are many options and trims that can be added to your Atlas to make it fit for every driving situation.
