Fake reviews, Buzzfeed & Sunday Riley

Whistleblowers revealed Sunday Riley employees had created fake reviews to boost sales on Sephora, an e-commerce website. They were directed to create multiple accounts on the site, write glowing reviews, and bury negative ones in order to sell more products.

The FTC investigated the Texas company and determined that Ms. Riley authored the reviews as well encouraged her staff to do so.

She instructed them to use "virtual privacy networks" (VPNs) before writing reviews so that they could not be traced to the real IP address of the company and were less likely to get caught. They were also asked to "rewrite," the reviews, to include information which could be relatable.

The FTC's investigation concluded that the company was "aware of the possibility that its employees were generating fake positive reviews on Sephora's website." But they didn't say how the company was aware of it.

The FTC said that the company's CEO and the ecommerce website were violating antitrust laws because they promoted products on the site that they never intended to sell. The FTC accused the company of misleading the public by claiming to have fake reviews that were written not by brand employees, but by normal people. The agency wants to see the company stop in future.
